Sustainable Fashion Greenwash

“Sustainable Fashion Greenwash” is misleading advertising to create a false environmentally responsible public image.
“Greenwash” is not grounded in scientific evidence, this book separates science from “Greenwash”.

The world is an interconnected ecosystem, and simply buying garments made from recycled or organic materials makes little difference when fast fashion companies can overproduce so many petroleum-based garments. Boycotting fast fashion does not reduce its environmental impact. Science shows us that we cannot passively consume our way out of overproduction.

The fashion industry is legally unregulated, and only through legal activism can we change it by regulating: fashion advertising, production, carbon emissions and labour laws.

Popular concepts used by companies, such as the “circular economy” and “upcycling”, are not based on science and violate the laws of physics and thermodynamics.

Only 9% of plastics ever made have been recycled, which is a justification for the fossil fuel industry to create an infinite supply of new plastic.

Sustainable swimwear or activewear made from recycled materials cannot be recycled. They are not saving the planet one purchase at a time and are releasing microplastics into our water and PFAS “forever chemicals” into our blood that cause liver cancer.

So, what can I do?
General advice is not helpful as everyone is different. Telling people to buy expensive sustainable fashion is a minor inconvenience to a wealthy person, but unattainable to someone living on a budget. Yet a wealthier person may still have a higher carbon footprint.

“Intersectional Action” is where people can take different actions depending on their circumstances and skills. You don’t have to be a fashion designer to take action, activism is open to everyone, and we can all make a difference in our own way.
